Question:
I have installed the DOS Shell using the Microsoft MS-DOS Packaged Product Version 4.00. The mouse cursor remains in the upper-left corner of the display. Moving the mouse has no effect. I don’t know if the buttons are responding because the location of the cursor doesn’t allow me to input anything using the mouse buttons. This problem also occurs with Version 4.01. Is this a problem with the DOS Shell?
Response:
Check your CONFIG.SYS file to see if the manufacturer’s mouse driver has been loaded correctly. If it hasn’t, edit the CONFIG.SYS file and install the appropriate mouse driver.
If the mouse driver has been installed correctly and the mouse still doesn’t function in the DOS Shell, check to see if the mouse is an IBM mouse. If it is, add “/MOS:PCIBMDRV.MOS” to the “@SHELLC” line in the DOSSHELL.BAT file. This information is documented on Page 96 of the “Microsoft MS-DOS Shell User’s Guide.”
If the mouse isn’t an IBM mouse and the “/MOS:PCIBMDRV.MOS” option is
in the DOSSHELL.BAT file, remove the “/MOS:PCIBMDRV.MOS” option from the “@SHELLC” line and try running the Shell again. A non-IBM mouse shouldn’t need the “/MOS:PCIBMDRV.MOS” switch in the DOSSHELL.BAT file.
If neither of these options works for you, consult your mouse manufacturer to see if the mouse and software are compatible with the DOS Shell included with the Microsoft MS-DOS Packaged Product.
