The information in this article applies to:
- Microsoft Word for the Macintosh, versions 3.0, 3.01, 3.02, 4.0, 5.0, 5.1

SUMMARY

You can create an underlined entry form in Word for the Macintosh that allows typing, allows you to keep the underline, and doesn’t reformat the paragraph.

Do the following to create an underlined entry line:

  1. Type the identifier for the field, such as NAME:.
  2. Place a tab stop where the underlining should end.
  3. Turn on underline, either through Format Character or by COMMAND+SHIFT+U.
  4. Type a character, such as "*".
  5. Press the TAB key to go to the tab stop. This creates a line that goes out from the left of the character to the tab.

To type information into the field, highlight the underlined character ("*"; do not select the tab character) and type the information. As long as the typed information does not extend past the ending tab stop, it does not affect the rest of the paragraph.

MORE INFORMATION

If you don’t want the placeholder character to be visible, use a space. The disadvantage with using a space is that it is harder to select, even though the effect is the same.
