MS-DOS

SUMMARY

Version 2.0 of Microsoft Works for MS-DOS may return the error message “Missing Working Copy Disk Files” if any of the following conditions exist:

  • Missing program files (especially WORKS.OVL)
  • Multiple versions of COMMAND.COM
  • Inconsistency in operating system components (for example, an MS-DOS 2.x COMMAND.COM combined with MS-DOS 3.x hidden system files)
  • WORKS.PGM has been renamed WORKS.EXE and then executed

To correct this problem, use the following steps:

  1. Check for missing program files. Be sure the files WORKS.OVL, COMM.SCD, INTL.RSC, MAIN.DIC, and so forth exist in the Works program directory. If a file is missing, copy it from the original Program disk.

  2. Verify that only one copy of the COMMAND.COM file exists on the hard disk. You may find COMMAND.COM files in both the root and DOS directories. If this is the case, make sure you have a copy of your original DOS system disk available, verify the root directory is in the DOS path, and then erase any additional copies of COMMAND.COM from locations other than the root.

  3. Check the DOS version against the COMMAND.COM version by typing “ver” (without the quotation marks), pressing ENTER, typing “command” (without the quotation marks), and pressing ENTER again. If the version numbers do not match (for example, if you are mixing PC-DOS and MS-DOS), recopy the operating system to the hard drive with the following steps:

    1. Copy the file COMMAND.COM from the original DOS system disk to the root directory of the hard disk boot drive.

    2. At the A prompt, type "SYS C:" (without the quotation marks).

    3. Remove the DOS disk, reboot the computer, and erase the WORKS.INI file from the Works program directory.

Note: If the above operation is performed with disks other than the DOS disks originally used to format the hard drive, the drive may become inaccessible after rebooting.

  4. Restart the computer using an original DOS disk with the following steps:

    1. Copy the COMMAND.COM file from the original DOS disk to the root directory of the hard disk boot drive.
