SUMMARY
If a footnote is created with a manually entered reference mark, followed later in the document by a footnote with an automatically entered reference mark, the automatic reference mark starts numbering with two (2) instead of one (1).
For footnotes to start numbering at one again, place a division break between the manually entered footnote reference mark and the automatically entered footnote reference mark. Format the division break as continuous with the Format Division Layout command. This will cause the footnotes to restart numbering from one.
In Word version 5.5, 6.0, the division, now called a section, can be manipulated from the Format Section menu.
