SUMMARY

Word versions 3.x and 4.00 use font ID numbers to store font formatting information in a document. Each font has a unique ID number for use by the system or programs running under that system. When a document is opened, the fonts sometimes may not be the same as those that it was saved with.

This problem is caused by changed font IDs. Font IDs usually are set by the font manufacturer, and remain constant for a given font. However, there are programs that change the ID of a font to resolve conflicts with fonts that have the same ID.

This problem also may occur if you open the document on a different machine than the one it was saved on, or use the new Adobe fonts, which sometimes have new ID numbers.

To keep a document from changing fonts because of different font IDs, save the document in RTF (Rich Text Format) file format. RTF saves a file using the font names. Use the following steps to save a file in RTF file format:

  1. Choose Save As from the File menu.
  2. Choose the File Format button in the lower-left corner.
  3. Choose Interchange Format (RTF) and choose OK.
  4. Give the document a new name. (This is a recommended step.)
  5. Choose Save.
  6. Close the document and take the file to the other machine, or install the new fonts.
  7. When opening the document, select OK when asked to “Interpret RTF Format”. The document will be in the same font as before.
