SUMMARY
With Excel 2.20, it is possible to plot an x-y scatter chart even if the data is not in a continuous area.
An example is as follows:
Category or X axis data is in column A, Value or Y axis data is in columns C, E, and G.
- Select the data in columns C, E, and G. (Use the COMMAND key to select a discontinuous area.)
- Open a new chart.
- Select Scatter from the Gallery menu.
- Select the type of scatter chart desired, and click OK.
- Go back to the worksheet and highlight x-values in column A.
- Select Copy from the Edit menu.
- Go back to the chart.
- Select Paste Special from the Edit menu.
- Choose Values in Columns, Categories in First Column, and Replace Existing Categories.
The chart should now be correct.
If the data is in rows, change step 9 to the following: Choose Values in Rows, Categories in First Row, Replace Existing Categories.
Note: The x-values do need to be in a continuous row or column to perform this operation.
