SUMMARY
The character count that is displayed when a Microsoft Word for the Macintosh, version 4.0 or 5.0, document is opened counts every printable character in the document. This count includes characters in the header, footer, and footnotes. The Word Count function (under the Utilities menu in Word 4.0 and under the Tools menu in Word 5.0) does not count the characters in the the headers or footers of the document.
