Summary:

The Spike in Microsoft Word for Windows is a specialized glossary. When you select text or graphics and press the Spike key combination (CTRL+F3), the selection is added to the Spike, in addition to any existing Spike contents. The current contents of the Spike are not replaced. When you insert the contents of the Spike into a document, all the text and graphics in the Spike are inserted; the Spike is left empty.

To cut an item to the Spike, you must first select the item you want to send, and then press CTRL+F3. To insert the contents of the Spike, position the insertion point where you want to insert the contents, and press the Unspike key combination (CTRL+SHIFT+F3).

If you send contents of a table to the Spike, you must select the contents of each cell separately and press CTRL+F3 each time. Also, when you insert the contents of the Spike into a document, a paragraph mark is added following the inserted contents. To remove the extra line, press the BACKSPACE key or press CTRL+BACKSPACE.

Note: Creating macros that include Spike and Unspike and assigning them to a menu can facilitate the use of the Spike command.
