Microsoft Paintbrush for MS-DOS, version 4.0

SUMMARY

When running Paintbrush for the first time, you may get one of the following messages:

Unable to access Virtual Disk

or

Unable to init Virtual Memory

This happens when the TMP variable is set incorrectly. You need not have a TMP variable, but if you do, certain actions will take less time such as cutting and pasting. To set up a TMP variable, add the following line to your AUTOEXEC.BAT file

SET TMP=C:\TMP

where the path C:\TMP points to an existing temporary directory. You can also set the environment by typing the above line at the DOS command line.

If you have set up a RAMDISK using extended or expanded memory, you can set your TMP variable to that disk. This can be done with the following two lines:

MD D:\TMP
SET TMP=D:\TMP

Please note the lack of spaces between the drive designator and path.
