SUMMARY
The "User's Guide" for Microsoft Paintbrush version 4.0 states on pages 3-4 that Paintbrush uses extended/expanded memory. This is true only if you use the extended/expanded memory as a RAM drive.

The Paintbrush documentation states that Paintbrush takes advantage of extended/expanded memory. This suggests that Paintbrush creates images that use the extended/expanded memory. This is not true; the only way Paintbrush can use extended/expanded memory is if this memory is set up as a RAM disk. This drive speeds up the use of cutting, pasting, and many of the other editing functions.
To set up extended or expanded memory as a RAM disk, you must use either VDISK.SYS, RAMDRIVE.SYS, or a similar RAM disk driver. Instructions on using these drivers to install a RAM disk are available in your MS-DOS manual.
Once the RAM disk is created add the following line to your AUTOEXEC.BAT file:
set tmp=n:
where n represents the letter that was assigned to your RAM disk.
