- Microsoft Works for MS-DOS, versions 2.0 and 3.0

SUMMARY

If you try to load a Microsoft Works for MS-DOS Word Processor file (.WPS) that contains carriage returns without line feeds, Works hangs, and the file is corrupted.

MORE INFORMATION

If you need to use this file or any other corrupted Word Processing file, you can use the workaround below to load the file. However, all formatting (fonts, styles, indents, and margins) are lost.

Note: The following steps assume that WORD1.WPS is a corrupted file.

  1. Exit Works.

  2. From the MS-DOS prompt, type the following command, and press ENTER:

    COPY CON+WORD1.WPS/B WORD1A.WPS

The computer displays the word “CON” on the screen, and the blinking cursor appears beneath the letter “C.”

  3. Press the SPACEBAR twelve times.

  4. Press CTRL+Z, then press ENTER.

The computer copies the twelve spaces and the contents of the file WORD1.WPS into the file WORD1A.WPS. Because there are twelve spaces at the beginning of the file, Works does not recognize the file as a Word Processing file and loads the file as an ordinary text file.

  5. Open WORD1A.WPS.

  6. Delete the extraneous text and characters at the beginning and end of the file.

  7. Choose the Select Replace command.

  8. Replace “^13” with “^P” (without the quotation marks) throughout the entire document.

  9. Choose the File Save As command and save the file as a text file.

  10. Exit Works.

At this point, you can restart Works and use the file again.
