- Microsoft Word for the Macintosh, versions 3.0 , 3.01, 3.02, 4.0 5.0

SUMMARY

When the Table of Contents command is used to generate a table of contents, a section break is inserted after the table of contents and before the first page of the text.

This section break is automatically formatted to restart the page numbers for that section at 1. If a document is set to number the pages from some number other than 1, the page number for the entries will be wrong when a table of contents is generated more than once. The numbers will start at 1 instead of the number the document was set to number from.

MORE INFORMATION

For example, if a table of contents is generated in a document that is set to number from 16, the page numbers listed in the table of contents will be correct the first time the table of contents is generated.

However, if a table of contents is generated again, the page numbers listed will start as if the document is numbered from 1. This is because the section break that was inserted after the first table of contents was generated is set to restart the page numbers at 1.

To work around this problem, set the document to number the pages from one number less than the number desired (to compensate for the page containing the table of contents). Then, deselect the “Restart at 1” option in the Section dialog box.
