File: Maximum or Minimum Return Zero in a Report

Last reviewed: October 27, 1994
Article ID: Q48966

Summary:

The method by which Microsoft File calculates the Minimum and Maximum in the summary report differs from the method used for the Count, Average, and Standard Deviation (Std. Dev.) functions.

With Count, Average, and Std. Dev., File uses only records with data in the field being calculated. With Minimum and Maximum, File uses all records.

For example, if there are four records, three with data in field A and one with field A blank, the Count of field A returns a "3".

Using the same four records as above, if all numbers in field A are positive, the Minimum of field A returns a "0" (zero). Note that blanks are seen as zeros for the purpose of Maximum and Minimum.
