Using Version 5.0 Learning Word on a Novell Network

SUMMARY

To use the version 5.0 Learning Word program on a Novell network, you must have the Novell READ, OPEN, and SEARCH rights to the directory where the tutorial is located. To save a record of your completed lessons, the Novell CREATE and OPEN rights must be present in the directory where the MSWNET variable points to.

If you do not have the Novell CREATE and OPEN rights to the directory specified by the MSWNET variable, you will receive the following error message:

This program won’t be able to keep a permanent record of the lessons you’ve completed. This may be caused by having a write protect tab on your disk.

MORE INFORMATION

The information on each user’s completed lessons is stored in the file KEYLES.CHK (for the keyboard lessons) and MOUSELES.CHK (for the mouse lessons). Learning Word looks to see if it can find a .CHK file in the directory that the MSWNET variable points to. If it can’t find .CHK in the directory that the MSWNET variable points to, Word creates a new .CHK file in the directory specified by the MSWNET. If the MSWNET variable has not been defined, Learning Word will look to the current directory to read or create the .CHK file.

Note: Even if the .CHK file exists in the current directory, Learning Word does not access it unless the directory has the Novell OPEN right set correctly.
