- Microsoft Word for the Macintosh versions 4.0, 5.0

SUMMARY

In Microsoft Word for the Macintosh version 4.0, after creating a link from Excel and changing the link to refer to a discontiguous area or to a defined name that refers to a discontiguous area on the Excel spreadsheet, Word cannot update the link properly. No error message appears on the screen, but the information is not updated.

This problem occurs because when you choose Update Link from the Edit menu, the computer goes to Excel to copy the information. The proper area is selected, but Excel cannot copy discontiguous areas; therefore, the information is not placed on the Clipboard and brought over to Word. Word 4.0 can update links only if they are contiguous areas.

Word 5.0 does not have this limitation. Word can “link” to a discontiguous area in Excel through Publish and Subscribe or Object Linking. For more information about Publish and Subscribe, see pages 671-679 of the Word 5.0 “User’s Guide to Microsoft Word.” For more information about Object Linking, see pages 679-783 of the Word 5.0 “User’s Guide to Microsoft Word.”
