The information in this article applies to:
- Microsoft Word for the Macintosh, versions 3.0, 3.01, 3.02, 4.0, 5.0, 5.1

SYMPTOMS

You cannot place endnotes for a series of linked documents at the end of the last document.

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed this to be a problem in Word for the Macintosh versions 3.0, 4.0, 5.0, and 5.1. This problem was corrected in Word for the Macintosh version 6.0.

WORKAROUND

However, you can use the Include Endnotes feature to put the endnotes at the end of the document where they were created by turning off Include Endnotes for all sections of the document except for the last section.

The second edition of “Working With Word,” by Chris Kinata and Gordon McComb (Microsoft Press) incorrectly states on Page 430:

The End of Section option in the Document dialog box tells Word to save footnotes until the end of each section, but only if you’ve set the Include Endnotes option in the Section dialog box.

This is true for sections in a document, but not linked documents.

If the footnotes are created with the Auto-Numbered Reference option selected, the footnote numbers will not be stationary. Cutting or copying the endnote pages to be put into a separate document eliminates the footnote reference numbers.
