MXL: Setting and Using Command Underline

SUMMARY

In Microsoft Excel versions 2.x and 3.x, most commands can be chosen from the keyboard. The specific keystroke to be used is a character in the command name. The Command Underline option displays the quick-key command by underlining the applicable character.

To set Command Underline, use the following steps:

1. On the Options menu, click Workspace.
2. In the Command Underline box, select On, Off, or Automatic.
3. Click OK.

The following chart explains the choices in Command Underline:

   Choice       Description
   ------------------------

   On           Command underlines are always displayed.

   Off          Command underlines are never displayed.

   Automatic    Command underlines are displayed only when a command is
                chosen with the alternate menu key.

To use the command key to execute a function, the alternate menu key must first be pressed (regardless of whether Command Underline is set to On, Off, or Automatic), followed by the assigned command key. By default, the alternate menu key is set to "/" (forward slash).

For example, to copy a selection using the keyboard, press /+E+C. The "/" activates command underline, the "E" activates the Edit menu, and the "C" chooses the Copy command.

To change the alternate menu key:

1. On the Options menu, click Workspace.
2. Type the desired character in the Alternate Menu Key box.
3. Choose OK.
