Last reviewed: November 17, 1997
Article ID: Q48082

The information in this article applies to:

  • Microsoft Word for the Macintosh, versions 3.0, 3.01, 3.02, 4.0, 5.0, 5.1, 5.1a

SUMMARY

Microsoft Word for the Macintosh has two basic index formats, which handle subentries of a main entry differently. When using the nested format, sub- entries appear below the main entry and are indented, as shown in the following example:

   Computers 3
   Microsoft 2
   Programs 5
        Excel 5
        Word 4
        Works 6

When using the run-in format, Word places sub-entries on the same line as the main entry with semicolons separating them, as shown in the following example:

   Computers 3
   Microsoft 2
   Programs 5: Excel 5; Word 4; Works 6
