Word 5.0: Paragraph Number Cross Reference Fails

PSS ID Number: Q47982 Article last modified on 11-02-1994

SUMMARY

The Microsoft Word version 5.0 paragraph number cross-referencing feature does not work properly on numbered paragraphs that are preceded by hidden text or a manual page break.

For example, in the following paragraph, the “.c.” and “;” are formatted as hidden text:

.c.1. This is a test paragraph;

The text “This is a test paragraph” has been marked as a bookmark.

When attempting to cross-reference the paragraph using the proper keyword, “para-num”, a question mark (?) prints and is displayed in Print Preview, which indicates the cross reference is incorrect.

Microsoft has confirmed this to be a problem in Word version 5.0. This problem was corrected in Word version 5.5.
