Word: Can’t Perform Math Calculation on Number with Comma

PSS ID Number: Q47846 Article last modified on 11-02-1994

MS-DOS

SUMMARY

In Word Version 5.00, a print merge field value surrounded by double quotes is considered to be text. Consequently, you cannot perform a mathematical calculation with a number containing a comma, such as “3,000.” Word will recognize the field as text and give the error message “Cannot have text or date field in math expression.”

Note: There is no procedure to have Word automatically put commas into numbers in a print merge. For example, you cannot have Word automatically change 3000 to 3,000.
