SUMMARY

There are several ways to select the type of scheduling method a certain task or tasks will use, that is, Fixed Duration versus Resource Driven scheduling.

Four methods are discussed below. They are as follows:

Method A: Using the Task Form Method B: Using the Task Sheet Method C: Changing Multiple Tasks at One Time Method D: Changing the Default Scheduling Method

MORE INFORMATION

Method A: Using the Task Form

  1. From the View menu, choose Task Entry.
  2. Select the task to change using the Prev or Next button on the Task Form.
  3. Tab to the Fixed check box.
  4. Press the SPACEBAR to change the scheduling method. If the check box is on, it uses Fixed Duration scheduling; if it’s off, it uses Resource Driven scheduling.

Method B: Using the Task Sheet

  1. From the View menu, choose Task Sheet.
  2. Select the Fixed field for the task to be changed using the arrow keys.
  3. Type Yes or No in the Fixed field. Yes chooses Fixed Duration scheduling; No chooses Resource Driven scheduling.
  4. Press ENTER to enter the change in the task.

Method C: Changing Multiple Tasks at One Time

  1. From the View menu, choose Task Sheet.
  2. Select the tasks to be changed using the SHIFT and arrow keys.
  3. From the Edit menu, choose Form (or click the form icon).
  4. Tab to the Fixed check box.
  5. Press the SPACEBAR to change the scheduling method. If the check box is on, it uses Fixed Duration scheduling; if it’s off, it uses Resource Driven scheduling.

Method D: Changing the Default Scheduling Method

Project for Windows defaults to Resource Driven scheduling. Use the following to change the default for new tasks:

  1. From the Options menu, choose Set Preferences.
  2. Scroll to the Default Duration Type field.
  3. Enter or select “Fixed” for Fixed Duration scheduling. Enter “Not Fixed” for Resource Driven scheduling.
  4. Choose the OK button.

The Yes/No task field Fixed determines which scheduling method is used for a task. If Fixed is set to Yes, the task uses Fixed Duration scheduling. If Fixed is set to No, the task uses Resource Driven scheduling.

For more information on scheduling methods and changing them, refer to the “Microsoft Project for Windows Reference” manual.
