The information in this article applies to:

SUMMARY

The method of adding special characters, such as grave accents, over other characters is supported by the Macintosh only for specific lowercase letters.

Microsoft Word for the Macintosh has a special method for adding special characters over other characters. To create a capital letter with a grave accent (or some other special character) over it, enter the following formula in your Word document:

(C,(`))

Please note the following:

  1. The "" is created by pressing COMMAND+OPTION+BACKSLASH.
  2. Replace “C” with the desired capital letter.
  3. The “4” in means that the following character in parentheses should appear 4 points above the baseline. Replace “4” with a different number if desired.
  4. Replace the “`” with another special symbol, if desired.

The formula is displayed only in Hide Paragraph mode. It is easiest to enter the formula in Show Paragraph mode and then switch to Hide Paragraph to display the final formula.

MORE INFORMATION

In Word version 5.0 or later, you can use the Equation Editor to create characters having special marks over them, but in this case, the marks are those that would typically be used in equations. The Equation Editor has an embellishments palette from which you can select common special marks. For example, to place a caret over a C, follow these steps:

System 7 or later

  1. Place your cursor in the text where you want the character to appear.
  2. From the Insert menu, choose Object.
  3. Choose Equation from the list and click OK.
  4. In the Equation Editor, type “C” (without quotation marks).
  5. From the Embellishments pallete (top row, third from left) choose the caret. The caret should appear over the C.
  6. From the File menu, choose Close.

The caret should appear over the C in your document.

System 6.0.2 - 6.0.8

  1. Double-click the Equation Editor icon to run the program.
  2. In the Equation Editor, type “C” (without quotation marks).
  3. From the Embellishments pallete (top row, third from left) choose the caret. The caret should appear over the C.
  4. Copy and paste the C and the caret to your Word document.
  5. To exit the Equation Editor, choose Quit from the File menu.
