“Printer Not Ready” When Printing to Parallel Port
PSS ID Number: Q46810 Article last modified on 11-02-1994
On some computers, mostly IBM XTs or compatibles, Word 5.00 may issue the error message “Printer not ready” although all settings are correct and the printer is on line.
Below is a correction that can be made to the Word program file that allows Word to properly print via the parallel port.
To repair the Word program file, perform the following steps:
Make a backup copy of your Word 5.00 Program Disk 1.
Using the backup disk, rename WORD.EXE to WORD.XXX.
Assuming DEBUG.COM is on your DOS Path, type DEBUG WORD.XXX.
At the “-” prompt, type the following, then press ENTER:
Type in 00 (two zeros), then press ENTER.
Type “w” (without the quotation marks), then press ENTER.
Type “q” (without the quotation marks), then press ENTER.
Copy WORD.XXX to WORD.EXE.
Run the Setup program to install a new copy of Word 5.00. The new program disk containing the repaired WORD.EXE file should be used during the installation process.
