Word 5.0: Screen Corruption on Cordata PC 400

PSS ID Number: Q46809 Article last modified on 11-02-1994

MS-DOS

SUMMARY

When running Microsoft Word for DOS version 5.0 in text mode, the screen may become corrupted and unreadable on a Cordata PC 400 XT computer. This computer has a CGA-compatible graphics card and a monochrome monitor.

MORE INFORMATION

A possible workaround is to use the MS-DOS Debug program to make a modification to the Word Program file. This procedure causes Word to respond to the video support on the Cordata PC 400 as if it were a monochrome display adapter, rather than a CGA. Word does not provide support for graphics modes when run with a monochrome display adapter.

Use the following procedure to correct the Word program and to allow it to run in text mode on the Corona PC 400 XT:

  1. Make a backup of your Word 5.0 Program Disk 1.

  2. Using the backup copy, rename the WORD.EXE file to WORD.XXX.

  3. Assuming DEBUG.COM is on your DOS path, type DEBUG WORD.XXX.

  4. At the “-” prompt, type the following, and press ENTER:

    e b82e

  5. Type in 01 (zero one), and press ENTER.

  6. Type the following, and press ENTER:

    e b838

  7. Type in 01, and press ENTER.

  8. Type the following, and press ENTER:

    e b843

  9. Type in 01, and press ENTER.

  10. Type the following, and press ENTER:

    e d983

  11. Type in 00 (two zeros), and press ENTER.

  12. Type “w” (without the quotation marks), and press ENTER.

  13. Type “q” (without the quotation marks), and press ENTER.

  14. Copy WORD.XXX to WORD.EXE.

  15. Run Word’s SETUP utility again to install the repaired version of Word 5.00. The Program disk with the new WORD.EXE file should be used during the setup process.
