The information in this article applies to:
- Microsoft Word for the Macintosh versions 3.x, 4.0, 5.0, 5.1

SUMMARY

In versions 3.x and later of Word, you can use the Renumber command to automatically apply numbering to an outline. When the document is in outline view, the numbering is applied according to the heading level or heading number of each paragraph.

For example, all Heading 1 paragraphs (Level 1 in Word 3.0) are numbered sequentially. Subsequent heading levels are numbered to distinguish them from the Heading 1 paragraphs. The following is a typical example of how Word numbers heading levels in an outline:

  1. Introduction
  2. Body of Document A. Topic 1 B. Topic 2
    1. Subtopic 1
    2. Subtopic 2 C. Topic 3
  3. Summary

The Renumber command only applies numbering to those headings that are visible in outline view. For example, if only Headings 1 and Heading 2 (or Level 1 and Level 2 in Word 3.0) are visible before you choose the Renumber command, only those headings are numbered (with two different patterns).

The Renumber command inserts a number or letter, a period, and a tab at the start of each paragraph that is being numbered.

MORE INFORMATION

For more information on renumbering, see pages 307-308 of the version 4.0 “Reference to Microsoft Word” manual, or pages 522-524 of the version 5.0 “Microsoft Word User’s Guide.”
