Word: Spell Checking the Headers, Footers, or Footnotes

PSS ID Number: Q46405 Article last modified on 03-07-1997

====================================================================== 3.00 3.01 3.02 4.00 MACINTOSH kbusage SUMMARY ———————————————————————- The information in this article applies to:

  • == Microsoft Word for the Macintosh, versions 3.0 , 3.01, 3.02, 4.0 ==

=

To spell check just the footer, header, or footnotes of a document, do the following:

  1. Position the insertion point in the header, footer, or footnote section. (Choose the Open Header/Footer command or open the footnote window if necessary.)
  2. Choose Spelling from the Document menu (Utilities menu in Word 4.00).

Word spell checks only that header, footer, or footnote section, and displays a message saying the end of the “document” has been reached when the entire sub-document is checked.

If you position the insertion point in the body of the document (that is, not the footer/header or footnotes) and then choose the Spelling command, the the spell checker checks the entire document (including headers, footers, and footnotes) in the following sequence:

  1. The document (body text) (by section)
  2. Headers (first header, even/odd headers – depending on setup)
  3. Footers (first header, even/odd headers – depending on setup)
  4. Footnotes (by number)

MORE INFORMATION

Word does not update the screen when it searches the header, footer, or footnote. Therefore, the spelling checker does not show the context of the misspelled words within the headers, footers, and footnotes. However, Word displays the unknown word and describes the location of the unknown word in the Spelling dialog box.
