Section Break Converts to Page Break in System Clipboard

PSS ID Number: Q46197 Article last modified on 03-07-1997

====================================================================== 3.00 3.01 3.02 4.00 MACINTOSH kbusage SUMMARY ======= ———————————————————————- The information in this article applies to:

  • == Microsoft Word for the Macintosh, versions 3.0 , 3.01, 3.02, 4.0 ==

When a section break is copied/pasted from Word versions 3.x to Word 4.00, it is converted to a page break. This behavior is also true when going from Word 4.00 to Word 3.x.

This problem occurs because the section break (two dotted lines in Show Paragraph mode) and the page break (one dotted line) have the same ASCII value (12). Therefore, when text containing a section break is copied from Word (3.x or 4.00), it is converted into text with a page break in the Clipboard.

When copying between documents in the same version of Word, the proper designation of the ASCII 12 character (section break or page break) is retained.
