Word: Bolded Word Within a Line Causes Entire Line to Be Bold

SUMMARY

On certain dot-matrix or daisywheel printers, if a line contains any text formatted as bold, the entire line will print as bold. This problem occurs on dot-matrix or daisywheel printers that use a carriage return pass (a mod:2 at byte:128 of the PCSD table in the .PRD) to bold text.

It may be possible to change the way the printer driver performs bold formatting by doing one of the following:

  1. Change the mod: value in byte:128 from 2 to 1. This method causes the printer to bold characters by using backspace correction.
  2. If the printer has a specific escape sequence that enables bold, you can change the mod: value at byte:128 to 0 (zero) and place the escape sequence after the mod: value and enclose it in double quotation marks. You will also need an escape sequence that disables bold. Place this escape sequence at the end of byte:132 and enclose it in double quotation marks. This method is a handy alternative for compatible printers that use a printer driver that exhibits the aforementioned problem.

Microsoft has confirmed this to be a problem in Word version 5.0. This problem was corrected in Word version 5.0a.
