MS-DOS

Summary:

Printer drivers that correct problems on the Hewlett-Packard (HP) DeskJet and DeskJet Plus are available as on the Supplemental Printer Kit for Microsoft Word for MS-DOS version 5.5b. You can obtain the Supplemental Printer Kit from Microsoft End User Sales at (800) 426-9400. If you call from outside the United States, contact Microsoft International Customer Service at (206) 936-8661.

The drivers also can be found in the file DWXHP0 in the Software/Data Library by searching on the word DWXHPO, the Q number of this article, or S12287. DWXHP0 was archived using the PKware file-compression utility.

DWXHP0.EXE and DW0060.EXE are the files that contain the HP DeskJet .PRDs on the Microsoft Download Service (MSDL).

There are three problems with the HP DeskJet drivers currently shipping on the Word version 5.0 Supplemental Printers disk. The problems occur only when using soft fonts and the DESKJETX.PRD and corresponding DAT files. The three problems and their solutions are detailed below.

More Information:

Problems

  1. The Universe 18 and 24-point fonts both print as either 14 or 15 point. If you download the 30-point Universe font, the 18 and 24-point fonts both print as 15 point; otherwise, they both print as 14 point.
  2. When downloading the Helvetica 8 font, a code that is part of the download escape sequence prints in the upper left margin of your document. If the HP DSU download utility is used to download, this code does not appear.
  3. The DESKJET3.PRD does not download the ASCII set. The DSU download utility that comes with the soft fonts allows you to download the 7-bit ASCII set containing 128 characters, but not the set containing 255 characters. This saves download time and memory space and allows you to use more fonts. Although the documentation indicates DESKJET3.PRD allows you to download the 7-bit ASCII set, it actually sends the entire character set. You can avoid this by using DSU and specifying only ASCII characters to be downloaded.

Solutions

  1. Run Makeprd on the appropriate DESKJETX.PRD file. Find the 18 and 24-point (font sizes 36 and 48, respectively) cPSDs for font 12 (Universe). Change the “t15V” at the end of the beginmod:0 string to “t18V” and “t24V” (without the quotation marks) for 18 and 24-point, respectively. Run Makeprd and convert the file back.
  2. To correct the escape sequence, run DEBUG followed by the name of the appropriate DESKJETX.DAT file. At the dash prompt, type “E 274” (without the quotation marks). The screen displays the number 43 and a colon. Type 63 and press ENTER. At the dash prompt, type “W” to write the new DAT file and “E” to exit.
  3. Start Word and load DESKJET3.DAT. Without typing anything else into the file, replace “.DJP” with “.USP”, and set confirm to No. Save the new DAT file. This process ensures that the ASCII fonts are downloaded.
