SUMMARY

To delete an auto-referenced footnote in Microsoft Word, do the following:

  1. Select the reference mark in the document for the footnote you want to delete.
  2. Press the BACKSPACE (or DELETE) key, or choose Cut from the Edit menu.

This procedure deletes the footnote reference and the associated footnote text in the Footnote pane. Word also automatically renumbers the footnote entries that follow.
