The information in this article applies to:
- Microsoft Word for the Macintosh, version 4.0

SUMMARY

When running Word version 4.00 on a color monitor, the nonprinting characters appear to be grayed out. Nonprinting characters are characters that serve a function but are not seen when printed, such as paragraph marks, new line characters (SHIFT+RETURN), spaces, hard spaces (OPTION+SPACEBAR), tab characters, etc.

This new feature is by design in Word 4.00. The nonprinting characters have been colored gray to set them off from the printing characters in the document (for example, a space and a period are now easier to tell apart).

If the monitor is set to black and white in the Control Panel, both printing and nonprinting characters are uniform in color.

The color of the nonprinting characters cannot be modified in Word 4.00.
