SUMMARY

The proper syntax of the DOS SET command varies among different computer systems. The “Reference to Microsoft Word” manual shows the following syntax for the command to create a network variable:

SET MSWNET = directory

The proper syntax for the Word 5.50 network variable is as follows:

SET MSWNET55 = directory

Note that there are spaces surrounding the equal sign. However, depending on the version and manufacturer of DOS being used, the spaces may be incorrect.

If Word appears to not recognize the network variable, change the SET command so that there are no spaces around the equal sign. To determine if Word’s network variable has been set, type the word “set” at the DOS prompt.
