Summary:
When a Word for the Macintosh version 4.00 document is created using the “Smart” Quotes option (from the Edit menu, choose Preferences) and is then Saved As Text Only or Text Only With Line Breaks, Word will not convert the typesetting quotation marks to normal quotation marks.
Many EDT programs do not recognize these quotation marks, and instead, may display a control code for them.
To change these quotation marks, do a global find and replace, as follows:
- Search for the code ^210 (ASCII for a left smart quote), and replace it with ^34 (ASCII for a normal, left quotation mark).
- Search for ^211 (ASCII for a right smart quote) and replace it with ^34 (ASCII for a normal, right quotation mark). The “^” character is called a caret and is entered by holding down the SHIFT key and pressing “6”.
Note: It may also be necessary to perform the same procedure on the apostrophes in a document. Do this by searching for the code ^213 and replacing it with the code ^39.
