Word 5.00: Setup Won’t Run with Large Hard Disk

PSS ID Number: Q44570 Article last modified on 11-02-1994

5.00

MS-DOS

SUMMARY

The Word Version 5.00 Setup program may fail to install Word on a hard disk or a partition of a hard disk that has 60-70 MB (Meg) of free disk space.

An error message such as the following appears:

Setup cannot complete the installation of Word. There is insufficient room on the hard disk. You need at least 1.2 Meg free.

To resolve this problem, use one of the following two workarounds:

  1. Copy enough files (any files) to the partition so that there is less than 60 MB of free disk space left on the partition. Run Setup again; then, delete the files that were copied.

  2. Install Word manually by copying files from the floppy disk to the hard disk. To run Word under DOS, the program files do not need to be combined by Setup. MAKEVID.EXE must be used to create a SCREEN.VID file in this case. For more information on MAKEVID.EXE, see MAKEVID.DOC.

Please note that this procedure cannot be used with OS/2.
