Setting Up Word on a 720K Floppy Disk

SUMMARY
When using 720K floppy disks, the Word version 5.00 SETUP utility leaves approximately 7K of available disk space on the program disk before any printer driver is copied onto the disk.
To work around this problem, you can do one of several things:
Place the printer driver files on the data disk rather than the program disk.
Delete MW.HLP from the program disk if you do not often access the Help screens.
Delete HYPH.DAT from the program disk if you do not often auto-hyphenate documents.
Redirect your autosave files to the data disk by inserting the following statement into your AUTOEXEC.BAT file:
SET MSWNET=B:
You must reboot after modifying your AUTOEXEC.BAT file with this statement.

Setting the MSWNET variable to point to your data disk causes all autosave files to be written to the data disk. In the event that your system fails, you must have the same data disk in the data drive when you restart Word.
Also, you must have your SCREEN.VID and MW.INI files on your data disk because the MSWNET variable instructs Word to look on the data drive for these files.
For Word version 5.50, the program file is too large to fit onto a single 720K diskette, so the grouping of all vital files to one disk is unsupported. Instead, the Word 5.50 setup decompresses the program files onto two 720K or three 360K working copy diskettes. The program is run from the first Program disk, with prompts to exchange program disks at appropriate times.
