Positioning Paragraph from Within Cell of a Table

Last reviewed: July 30, 1997
Article ID: Q44218

The information in this article applies to:

  • Microsoft Word for the Macintosh, versions 3.0, 3.01, 3.02, 4.0, 5.0, 5.1, 6.0

SUMMARY

Although a paragraph can be defined as an absolutely positioned paragraph within the cell of a table in Word version 4.0, the paragraph does not position itself as expected.

Position formatting does not affect a cell of a table if it is not the first cell of the row. An entire row will always be positioned together; it is not possible to break a row with the Position format.

The paragraph remains in the cell as ordinary text even though it retains the Position format that automatically applies if the paragraph is cut from the cell and then pasted before or after the table.

To create the positioned paragraph outside the table, follow these steps:

  1. Select the positioned paragraph from within the table cell. Be sure to include the paragraph mark in your selection. If the paragraph is the last paragraph in the cell, first insert a carriage return between the paragraph and the end-of-cell marker.
  2. From the Edit menu, choose Cut.
  3. Position the insertion point anywhere outside the table on the same page.
  4. From the Edit menu, choose Paste.
