Graphic File Format Not Recognized Switching Windows in Word

SUMMARY
In Microsoft Word for DOS version 5.0, choose Link Graphics from the Library menu and type a graphics filename. Press TAB to move to the “file format:” field, which should fill automatically (type HPGL if necessary). Split a new window with the mouse and press ENTER. Word displays the following error message:
Not a valid graphics file format
Examining the “file format:” field shows a blank list.
Microsoft has confirmed this to be a problem in Word for DOS version 5.0. This problem was corrected in Word version 5.5. In Word version 5.5 you cannot manipulate the window while in a menu or dialog box.
