SUMMARY

In Microsoft Word for DOS version 5.0, an inserted em hyphen and text inserted after the em hyphen, do not receive the character formatting of th text before the em hyphen.

Steps to Reproduce Problem

  1. Start Word and enter a blank line.
  2. Move the cursor up to the blank line and press ALT+I (or ALT+X+I if using a style sheet).
  3. Type some text, and press CTRL+ALT+- to insert an em hyphen.
  4. Type in some more text; note that the em hyphen and text inserted after it are not formatted for italic.

This problem occurs because when you press CTRL+ALT+- the em hyphen receives its formatting from the following character (in this case the unformatted paragraph mark) except when the em hyphen is on the endmark. If the endmark was the following character rather than a paragraph mark, the em hyphen would receive the italic formatting.

Microsoft has confirmed this to be a problem in Word version 5.0. This problem was corrected in Word version 5.5.
