“Access Denied” When Deleting Word Program Files

SUMMARY

The “Access denied” DOS error message occurs if you try to delete the WORD.EXE or many other Word Version 5.00 program files from the hard disk. This message occurs because Word’s SETUP utility makes the Word program files read-only.

This is done to provide built-in network and OS/2 support, which requires that files be read-only for program sharing. It also helps to prevent accidental program erasure.

This is not a copy protection scheme and there are no hidden files with Word 5.00. To delete a Word program file, the read-only status of the file can be changed to read-write using the DOS or OS/2 Attrib command (ATTRIB -R <filename>), or by using the RDWRITE utility supplied with Word.
