Unselecting Your Chart with the Keyboard in Excel

Last reviewed: October 31, 1994
Article ID: Q44011

The information in this article applies to:

  • Microsoft Excel for Windows, versions 2.x, 3.0, 4.0

SYMPTOMS

When selecting a chart by using the Select Chart option from the Chart menu, there appears to be no way to clear the chart using only the keyboard.

WORKAROUND

There is no simple key to use (such as ESC, BREAK, and so on) to eliminate the selection boxes from your chart. However, there are ways to work around this (keyboard only) limitation.

Select any of the formatting choices from the menu, including Chart Add Arrow, Chart Add Legend, Format Chart (no selection necessary, just press OK), or Chart Add Overlay. Then (if the formatting choice you made is not a preference) delete the selected format, removing the selection boxes from your chart.

Note: If no special formatting enhancements have been made to your chart, such as a Legend or Attached Text, and so forth, (all these enhancements will be erased), then all you need to do is choose Edit Clear Formats.
