Summary:

Because styles in Word for DOS are described by two-character names, they will not be in the same format (heading 1, heading 2, etc.) that Word for the Macintosh uses to describe outline styles. The following steps describe how to convert the first outline heading from Word for DOS to a heading 1 style in Word for the Macintosh. The same steps can be applied to as many levels as are used in the Word for DOS document.

The following steps assume that the first heading outline style from Word for DOS is called “1”:

1. Transfer the Word for DOS document and its style sheet to the Macintosh, and open them in Word for the Macintosh.
2. From the Format menu, choose Define Styles.
3. Click the style “1” to select it.
4. In the “Style:” box, delete the “1” and type “heading 1” (all lowercase letters and without the quotation marks). Click OK.
5. The message, “Name Matches Style. Merge With heading 1?” will be displayed. Click OK.
6. The style “1” is now a “heading 1” style and can be used in Outline view and when creating a table of contents.
7. Repeat these steps for all other levels used in the Word for DOS document.

These steps can be used in Word version 4.00 for the Macintosh; however, please note that the outline levels in Word versions 3.0x for the Macintosh have a different name; “level 1”, “level 2”, etc., is used instead of “heading 1”, “heading 2”. Therefore, when using Word 3.0x, substitute “level 1” for “heading 1” in the above steps.
