- Microsoft Works for the Macintosh, versions 1.x, 2.0, 3.0 and 4.0

SUMMARY

When a file created using the Capture Text command is imported into a Microsoft Works Word Processor document, Works may appear to add linefeeds or carriage returns in the middle of lines. Works is not adding linefeeds or carriage returns but is word wrapping normally. Monospace fonts and proportional space fonts are different and thus line breaks may appear in different places.

Text is normally transmitted and received in a monospace font, such as Monaco 9 point. When loaded into a Word Processor document, the text defaults to Boston or Geneva 10 point, a proportional space font. (With Works versions 3.0 and 4.0, options for 9- and 12-point fonts are also available). As a result of this change, Works adjusts the line lengths accordingly.

To make the captured text file appear exactly as it is received, format the text with a monospace font, such as Monaco 9 point or Courier 10 point. Because the computer adjusts the ruler according to the printer selected in the Chooser, the margins may also need to be changed.

MORE INFORMATION

Works has macro capabilities that can streamline font and size changes as well as change page setup options. A stationery file can also be created with the proper settings.

You can start the recorder and then perform the operation once. Then you can attach the macro to a keystroke. If you use macros, please consider the following to ensure you do not add unwanted formatting to your document:

  1. Because it is a recorded macro, the exact same steps are repeated each time regardless of the position of the cursor or presence of any dialog boxes. Unless the EXACT same starting point is used (at the beginning of the first line for instance) the results will be unpredictable.
  2. Macros use a modifier key (the OPTION key). When macros are turned on, the modifier key cannot be used for anything else or it may conflict with other operations.
