COBOL Version 2.2 ISAM Gets “Record Not Found” on DOS 4.0

PSS ID Number: Q43255 Article last modified on 04-20-1993

The information in this article applies to:
- Microsoft COBOL for MS-DOS, versions 2.2, 3.0, and 3.0a

Summary: COBOL Version 3.0a and earlier may not operate properly on MS-DOS Version 4.0. All versions of Microsoft COBOL were written prior to MS-DOS 4.0 and were never tested on this version of MS-DOS. MS-DOS 4.0 allows for disk partitions greater than 32 megabytes and expanded memory. COBOL 3.0a and earlier cannot take advantage of these features. It has been reported that when running COBOL 2.2 under DOS 4.0, the ISAM system may report a run-time file status error of “RECORD NOT FOUND” when trying to access any record in a file, even if the record exists. One reported workaround is to increase FILES= and FCBS= in your CONFIG.SYS file, and then reboot.
