Can’t Load Another Program After Quitting Word

MS-DOS

SUMMARY

If device drivers or programs are installed into memory with the Library Run command, they will be installed in memory higher than where Word is located. This becomes a problem after quitting Word because this information still resides at the higher memory location, effectively reducing the amount of free memory available to run further programs.

It is NOT recommended to install any device drivers or programs from within a program shell, such as Word’s Library Run command.

For example, a common use of the DOS MODE command is to initialize the communication between a computer and a printer through a COM port, as in the following example:

MODE COM1:9600,N,8,1,P

Executing this command at the DOS shell set up with the Library Run command will reduce the amount of memory available to other programs after quitting Word. This statement and any others that install device drivers or other programs should be executed before entering Word.

This information applies to the installation of device drivers or programs from within any application that allows you to create a DOS shell. This problem is not particular to Word.
