SUMMARY

Word’s Setup program is designed to run from Drive A. To run Word from Drive B, the DOS ASSIGN command must be used to assign the Drive A designation to physical Drive B. The following instructions assume that the DOS ASSIGN command file is on the DOS path or is being invoked from the directory in which it is located.

To run the Word Setup program from Drive B, do the following:

  1. At the C: prompt, type ASSIGN A=B and press ENTER.
  2. Insert the Setup disk in Drive B, type A:SETUP and press ENTER.
  3. When Setup has completed, type ASSIGN at the C: prompt and press ENTER. This resets the drives to their original specification.

Note: ASSIGN is not available from a normal installation of DOS versions 6.0 or 6.2. It is available from the Supplemental Resource Kit. The Resource Kit includes the MS-DOS 6 Supplemental Disk. The disk contains all the commands that were included with MS-DOS 5.0 but not MS-DOS 6.

To obtain the Resource Kit, send in the coupon at the back of the Microsoft MS-DOS User’s Guide, and then send it in. Other methods for obtaining the Supplemental Disk are described in “AccessDOS” in “Appendix B” of the Microsoft MS-DOS User’s Guide.
