Summary:

There are two ways to insert text into Word for Windows documents.

To insert new text into a paragraph and maintain the text already in the paragraph, place the insertion point where you want the new text to appear and begin typing. The previously entered text moves to the right to accommodate the insertion of new text.

To overwrite previously entered text with new text, follow the steps below:

  1. From the View menu, choose Status Bar (Word for Windows 1.X only).
  2. Press the INS key. The letters OVR appear in the lower right corner of the status bar.

As you type new text into the document, the new inserted text overwrites the previous text.

To return to insert mode, press the INS key and the OVR letters disappear from the status bar.
