SUMMARY

To add Extended Character Set (ECS) support to a PostScript printer, do the following:

  1. Find the Adobe codename of the character in the Adobe reference book.
  2. Go to the “/foreignvec [” section of POSTSCRP.INI or POSTSCRL.INI (this is located towards the end of the .INI file).
  3. Find a number that isn’t currently being used. Enter the Adobe codename at this point: ### /codename (where ### is a decimal number between 128 and 255 that can be accessed inside Word by simultaneously pressing the ALT key and the number on the number pad.)
  4. Reset the printer by turning it off and then on again.

There are two other factors that can affect whether the extended character prints or not:

  1. The codename used must be available within the font that is being printed; not all codenames can be printed in every font style.
  2. Make sure that there is not a Character Translation Table (CTT) in the printer driver that remaps this character to another character.
