SUMMARY

If the message “Invalid file” is displayed each time Word is started, the style sheet NORMAL.STY may be corrupt or damaged. To check for this, do the following:

In Word version 5.5, the message “This file is not a Word style sheet” followed by the full pathname of NORMAL.STY will be displayed if NORMAL.STY has been corrupted or damaged.

  1. Choose the Format Stylesheet Attach command to identify the location of NORMAL.STY.

In Word 5.5, from the File menu, choose New. The given directory will identify the location of NORMAL.STY. Another indication of the existence of NORMAL.STY is its presence within the Use Style Sheet: file box.

  2. At the DOS prompt, take a directory listing of the NORMAL.STY file.

  3. Check the file size of NORMAL.STY, which should be more than zero bytes; if it is zero bytes, delete the file from the directory.

Most occurrences of a NORMAL.STY file with zero bytes are reported on Novell or Banyan networks.
