SUMMARY

To run Word Version 4.00 on the Tandy 1400, the cursor speed must be set to “0” (zero) under the Options “cursor speed:” field. If the cursor speed is not set to zero, the Tandy 1400 will exhibit strange behavior, for example, a letter will be typed multiple times or the command menu will flash erratically.

This problem has been corrected in Word Version 5.00.

When Word 4.00 is first installed, the cursor speed is set to “3”. To change the cursor speed to “0”, you can use one of the following methods:

1. The first method is as follows:

   1. Start Word on Drive A on another computer, setting the Options “cursor speed:” field to “0”.

   2. Quit the program. This procedure writes an MW.INI file, which stores the cursor speed setting.

   3. Copy the MW.INI file to the the Word directory or disk on the Tandy 1400.

2. The second method is as follows:

   (Please note: These instructions assume that you have already started Word previously, which has created a MW.INI file in the Word directory or disk. These instructions also assume that you have the DOS DEBUG utility, DEBUG.EXE, available.

   1. If MW.INI and DEBUG.EXE are on the same directory or disk, type the following at the DOS prompt:

      DEBUG B:MW.INI

   2. Press the ENTER key. The screen should now display a nonblinking hyphen and the blinking cursor.

   3. Type the following (be sure there is a space between the letter “E” and the number “11”):

      E 11A

   4. Press the ENTER key. You will see a line that reads in the following format, where numbers and letters (hexadecimal digits) will appear in place of each “x”:

      xxxx:xxxx xx

      The following is an example:

      1D17:011A 03

      Please note: This number is followed by a hyphen.

   5. Type 00 (two zeros), then press the ENTER key. This will change the 03 on the previous line to 00, which is the cursor speed.

   6. Type the letter “W” and press the ENTER key. The line “Writing xxxx bytes” (where xxxx is some number) should be displayed.

   7. Type the letter “Q” to exit DEBUG. You now should be able to run Word.
