SUMMARY

Word adjusts the spacing between words so that text aligns evenly on both the left and right margins when the Format Paragraph “alignment:” field is set to Justified. As a result, even though the margins appear evenly aligned, there may be large gaps between some words in the text. Generally, if the font size is large and the column width is small, the spacing between words is more noticeable.

The following are two methods to reduce the amount of space between words of justified text:

  1. Format your text for a smaller font size.

  2. Hyphenate some of the words in your document. By splitting words that are too long to fit at the end of a line, you can ensure that each line contains approximately the same number of characters.

Make sure to use optional hyphens, or you may find unwanted hyphens appearing in your text during future edits. To create an optional hyphen, use the CTRL+- (MINUS key) combination when entering the hyphen, or use the Library Hyphenate command, which uses optional hyphens.
